“Desi” means someone of South Asian birth or descent living abroad, while “caliente” means “hot” in Spanish. Desi caliente is a dance company combining Bollywood, Bhangra and Latin dance forms into a hot fusion of distinct styles. 

Founded in 2010, Desi Caliente has been performing and teaching in the Boulder and Denver metro area. Notable performances at the Indian Dance Festival, the Taste of Colorado, the Denver Salsa and Bachata Congress and the annual South Asian Student Association cultural show. 

What is Bollywood

“Bollywood” is an energetic dance made popular from the Hindi films.  It is a fusion of styles drawing from the Indian folk and classical dances, as well as disco and other modern, western influences.  Some movements are reminiscent of what Americans think of as Hip Hop, but with a uniquely Indian character.

Bhangra is from the Northern Indian State of Punjab and danced in all sorts of occasions from weddings to a Friday night gathering of friends. Bhangra has more formalized movements and the music is easily recognized due to its driving beat.  Bouncy, syncopated steps and big movements of the arms and legs make for a great workout. 

Finally Directors Subbu and Reid bring 10 years of experience in Latin styles of Dance including Salsa and Bachata.

Desi Caliente’s Artistic Director is Subbu Palaniappan. Subbu is originally from the city of Chennai, in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.  He has been dancing, directing and choreographing Bollywood and Bhangra dance for 20 years.
